In our opinion one of the most important considerations when purchasing any United States rare coin is its "eye appeal".
"Eye appeal" simply stated is how the coin aesthetically looks or how attractive the coin is to the naked eye. This may involve vivid color of a coin, outstanding mint luster, lack of bag marks normally seen for a particular grade or a combination of all of the above.
In an effort to better inform you, the buyer, about how the coin looks in terms of "eye appeal", we use adjectives to better assist you in our descriptions.
EXCEPTIONAL -- A coin with this term used in the description is in the top 5% of all coins graded for that respective grade.
SUPERB -- A coin with this adjective used in the description will fall into the top 10% of all coins graded for that respective grade.
PROPERLY GRADED -- Approximately 75% of all coins graded by the grading services will fall into this category. We do not use this term in our descriptions because 75% are properly graded.
NEGATIVE EYE APPEAL -- The coins, which deserve this rating, normally are dark and unattractive or have been vastly over graded at one of the grading services. About 10% of all coins graded fall into this category. We never sell these coins to you, we wholesale them to other dealers.
Hence our "eye appeal" rating system,
